IMPACT
One of our motivations when setting up Datirs as a business was to make a positive impact in the world.
We position ourselves as a sustainable alternative to the coffee industry. Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages globally. Between us all on this Earth, we consume about 2 billion cups of coffee every day adding up to around 10 million tons of coffee per year. That’s a lot of coffee. And global heating means we’re running out of space to grow it.
Present-day coffee cultivation comes with loads of negatives – deforestation, soil erosion, water scarcity and contamination, biodiversity loss, and exploitative working conditions, to name but a few.
But that’s just the start of our problems, as a planet of coffee-drinkers.
There are several areas where we feel we can contribute.
Climate Adaptation
As climate change reduces coffee yields and drives up prices, Western society must prepare for alternatives. Date palms, thriving where little else can, offer an environmentally sustainable option. Maximizing the use of dates, including every part, is essential as climate challenges make harvests smaller and more complex.
Health
The growing need for a coffee alternative stems from its potential health risks, as it can exacerbate issues like stress, anxiety, heart problems, and diabetes. Additionally, coffee may negatively affect fertility, pregnancy, and breastfeeding, while also being unsuitable for those with conditions like IBS due to its diuretic properties. People are increasingly seeking a gentler, calming drink.
Social
We aim to impact and create economic growth for communities. Datirs is dedicated to providing fair wages to all its employees. We have an office in Cairo, where we generate job opportunities for the local community, and another in Barcelona. As part of our core values, Datirs respects and values the opinions of its workers, using their feedback to foster a positive and improved work environment.

It’s about to get a whole lot trickier.
Climate change is already wreaking havoc in traditional coffee-growing regions, making coffee prices more volatile, and by some estimates, 50% less land area will be suitable for coffee production by 2050.
Imagine what that will do to coffee prices!
With café culture such an entrenched part of our lives and consumption rising steadily, consumers are going to have to get used to a different taste.
That’s where Datirs comes in. We can see the writing on the wall, and have worked with researchers and food engineers to develop a sustainable alternative to coffee that has a similar flavour profile.
Our brew satisfies a craving for a rich, mellow and flavourful warm drink that slides into your daily routine alongside coffee, tea, infusions, matcha, turmeric chai and the like.
If you don’t like coffee, you might find this delicious.
And if you’re a coffee-lover, you might also have a host of reasons for wanting to give it a go, including health or environmental concerns.
