Our History
We're positive people, coming with solutions
At Datirs we’re passionate about unlocking the potential of date seeds to create unique, innovative products with benefits for both consumers and the farmers who grow the dates. Datirs was born from a simple idea: to turn what’s often discarded into something valuable.
Our founder Mostafa Shokry hails from Egypt and is now settled in Barcelona. His background in community-building and sustainabilty microprojects means that social responsibility is in his DNA. When he discovered the versatility of date seeds and their incredible nutritional benefits – backed up by extensive research – he decided to harness this natural bounty.
By turning roasted date seeds into a delicious, healthy beverage, Datirs ensures no part of the date goes to waste while enriching café culture with another healthy coffee alternative. This zero-waste, eco-friendly drink promotes well-being while offering a natural, caffeine-free energy boost—a win for both you and the planet.
Building on cultural ties to his homeland, Mostafa is activating a promising income stream for the rural communities in Egypt who grow the dates – because Datirs’ innovative products utilize a part of the fruit that farmers often can’t monetize.
Our mission is to give consumers more ethical options by providing high-quality, sustainable alternatives to everyday products, made from date seeds and dates.
Mostafa's Vision: A Journey of Change
Mostafa Shokry moved to Barcelona four years ago, where he has embraced life within the multicultural digital nomad and café community.
In his native Egypt, he worked at grassroots level with Dawar for Arts & Development, running therapeutic drama workshops and outreach among vulnerable Cairo communities impacted by poverty, war or displacement.
He also travelled all over Egypt with Firefly Org, which supports disadvantaged groups living in harsh conditions in inaccessible regions. As well as offering psychological support, Mostafa and his team of community organisers helped them set up microprojects to generate an income.
This wealth of community-building experience informs what Mostafa wants to create with Datirs.
With input from his father, Dr. Ahmed Shokry of Cairo’s Food Technology Research Centre (whose PhD work focused on the effects of dates on the human body), Mostafa is developing a range of date-based products that satisfy the tastes and ethical beliefs of today’s consumers: vegan and gluten-free, health-enhancing, environmentally sustainable and low-impact, responsibly sourced and fairly paid for.
